Three big state road projects are under way in Alpharetta at once: express lanes on Georgia 400, the widening of Old Milton Parkway and the widening of Main Street (state Route 9). GDOT runs all three. The city maintains its own streets, signals and sidewalks.

This week

As of Oct. 3, the city had posted no new road closure notices since its July 23 express lanes update. Work on the express lanes continues, and the city says most Georgia 400 lane closures are scheduled overnight; check 511 before a late-night or early-morning drive. This section is rewritten every week from GDOT, 511 and city notices.

Georgia 400 express lanes

GDOT’s project (P.I. 0001757) adds toll express lanes on Georgia 400 through Alpharetta. Construction began in spring 2026 and the lanes are expected to open in 2031, according to GDOT’s project fact sheet (PDF), dated April 29, 2026. GDOT says the schedule is subject to change.

The city’s July 23 update told drivers to expect:

  • overnight lane closures on Georgia 400;
  • traffic shifts as work moves between segments;
  • narrower shoulders in active work zones;
  • construction vehicles entering and leaving the highway; and
  • slower traffic during overnight work and the morning commute after a closure.

The fact sheet’s draft map, marked subject to change, shows express-lane access at Windward Parkway and McGinnis Ferry Road. GDOT’s project FAQ (PDF) says MARTA plans bus rapid transit in the lanes from North Springs to the Windward Parkway park-and-ride, with stops at Holcomb Bridge Road and North Point Mall. The project office is at 800 North Point Parkway.

Old Milton Parkway

Work on the state Route 120 widening between North Point Parkway and Kimball Bridge Road began in April with tree clearing and utility relocation, the city said in its April 14 release. Gas, power and communications lines move first, in phases, before widening starts. The city told drivers to expect intermittent lane closures, occasional delays and shifting traffic patterns during work hours. Construction is expected to continue through late summer 2029.

Main Street (state Route 9)

The widening from Upper Hembree Road to Windward Parkway was first due to finish in spring 2024. In its most recent update, April 24, the city said GDOT expected construction to continue into spring 2026, with utility relocations, sidewalks, pedestrian lighting, final paving and median landscaping still under way. Neither GDOT nor the city has posted a newer completion date that we could find. Finished pieces include the Roswell Street roundabout and the section between Upper Hembree Road and Old Milton Parkway.

City projects

The city’s own street, sidewalk and stormwater work is announced on its news page. Recent examples:

  • Mid Broadwell Road: a culvert replacement west of Jennifer Oaks Drive closed the road to through traffic at the creek from May 26 to July 26, 2026, and added sidewalk on the south side between Bethany Road and Jennifer Oaks Drive.
  • Wills Park: the city’s July 4 fireworks closed Old Milton Parkway from Wills Road to state Route 9, and Wills Road, from 4 p.m. until the end of the show. See our Fourth of July guide.

Fulton County’s TSPLOST, a 0.75-cent tax paid by Fulton residents outside Atlanta, funds transportation projects. Voters approved it in 2016 and North and South Fulton voters renewed it in 2021. The county says each city picks and manages its own TSPLOST projects (county TSPLOST page).

Planning ahead

The Atlanta Regional Commission and the north Fulton cities, including Alpharetta, are writing a North Fulton Comprehensive Transportation Plan. The city’s July 23 notice links to the plan’s online survey.

Using 511

511 Georgia is GDOT’s traveler information service. Call 511 from any phone for traffic updates by voice, or to reach a live operator 24 hours a day, and use it to request HERO roadside help in metro Atlanta. If you are in an emergency, call 911 instead, 511 says. The 511ga.org map shows closures, crashes and cameras.

What this means for you

  • Georgia 400 express lanes work is scheduled to run to 2031, with most lane closures overnight.
  • Old Milton Parkway between North Point Parkway and Kimball Bridge Road is a work zone until 2029.
  • Check 511 before you drive, and report city potholes and signal problems to Public Works.
